Jewish And Gypsy

Ancestry DNA testing is changing the world, and changing the way the people see the world. An increasing number of people get their ancestry DNA results and discover they are Jewish and Gypsy. Some Gypsies are getting their ancestry DNA results and discovering they are Jewish. Some Jewish people are getting their ancestry DNA test back and discover they carry Gypsy ancestry. Some people get their ancestry DNA testing done and discover they are Jewish and Gypsy. 

On a very basic level, at various times in European history, Jews and Gypsies were victims of the same expulsions and persecution, they shared living on the highways and also professions.   It only stands to reason, if they were living on the same highways, they would have mixed. And this may be the reason so many people are finding out they are both Gypsy and Jewish. 

But, compiling available research, it appears there may be a third, under studied population, Jewish Gypsies! People who left India as Jews, followed the Silk Road, always marrying other Jews, and finally ending up in Europe: Jewish and Gypsy.

Swiss Gypsy Jews: If you family came to Pennsylvania from Switzerland, between 1720 and 1780, or after 1850, you may be a Swiss Gypsy Jew. 

Anglo Romany Jews: More and more Anglo Romanies are finding out they are Jewish and Gypys. One family discovered they carried Jewish ancestry and this led to a whole project on this Anglo Romani Jewish family. 

This one Anglo Romani family, with significant Jewish roots, also have many relatives that moved to America. In the 1700's, many family members were lost due to false accusations, convictions, and deportation to the colonies. In the 1850's, many members of their family immigrated to America. These folks tend to be called Romanichals. If you live and North America, and your DNA test reveals Jewish and Gypsy ancestry, you probably descend from an Anglo Romani Jewish immigrant. 

Spanish Gypsy Jews

While the English family were surprised to discover they were Jewish and, their DNA cousins, knew exactly what they were. The Spanish Jewish Gypsy community is very well organized. If you come from that community, there are lots of resources available to you. Check out that section. 

Many Many Spanish Jewish Gypsies were either deported to the South American colonies were went of their own volition. If you are from South America, and you find out your are Jewish and Gypsy, you probably descend from one of the Spanish Jewish Gypsy families.
